Black Canadian Hired as 1st Female Coach on Professional Team in Ottawa

Ottawa, ON Canada: Fabienne Perrin-Blizzard is currently the Head Coach for Capital Courts Academy, an Ontario high performance prep school program operating out of the Capital Courts Training Centre. ‘Coach Fab’ is also a coach for the Cadette Women’s National Team and has spent the better part of her volunteer career working with male and female youth of all ages in the Ottawa region as a mentor, coach, skill developer and program manager.

A former standout athlete turned Head and Assistant Coach at the University of Ottawa, Fabienne also served as the Head Coach of Team Ontario at both the U15 and U17 levels en route to 3 Gold and 1 Bronze level finish at Provincial Championships. In 2018 ‘Coach Fab’ was hired a member of the Cadette Women’s National Team , Team Canada’s under 16 age group which went on to medal internationally.

Fabienne is accustomed to performing a leading role on teams that have traditionally been male-dominated. In her professional life, she has spent years a Project Lead in the corporate sector. Now, she intends to do the same at the professional sports level. Recently, Fabienne was hired by The Ottawa BlackJacks basketball team (CEBL), making her the first female in Ottawa, Ontario to be hired as a professional coach in the nation’s capital.

“I believe women can coach in any sport, and it’s up to our generation to keep challenging the status quo, and normalize women coaching in every arena.

I have a sister who coaches Football in Quebec, and we share the same mentality. Sport is sport, and as we continue to develop North America, I believe we will continue to see success because we are truly providing athletes with the most opportunities to succeed with diverse leaders and coaches.”

On what it means to be named the 1st Female Coach ?

The CEBL was the first professional sports league in North America to resume play after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The league features prominent North American professional players and even features high calibre U Sports mens players (Canadian universities). Known for her philosophy of Player Development and playing defensive-minded, Coach Fab is a welcome addition to a team that 4th out of seven teams in in 2020.

With this appointment, Coach Fabienne has become the first female join the staff of a Professional Sports Team in the Ottawa region – a fitting step as she continues to blaze a trail for others to follow.
