Black Canadian Named HC at StFX University

Antigonish, NS: Tyrell Vernon has assumed the Head Coaching position for the St. Francis Xavier Men’s Basketball Team (U Sports) in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. Tyrell, a former high school All-Canadian played with the X-Men for two seasons in 2011-12 and 2012-13, having been a key part of the squad that won a bronze medal in 2012.

Tyrell was hired as an Associate Coach in 2019 and becomes the 2nd Coach appointed in the history of StFX Men’s Basketball, succeeding Steve Konchalski, the longest serving and winningest coach in the history of Canadian university sport totalling 919 wins over 46 years.

On what it means to be appointed HC of StFX University , your alma mater?

Tyrell Vernon has been a standout player and coach in the Canadian basketball landscape for numerous years. Following a career playing professionally, in 2016 Tyrell won a Championship as a Player/Coach in the NIKE Crown League hosted in Toronto, Ontario. He also was head coach of Team TopSzn, the finalists at the 2017 OVO Bounce tournament, another elite pro-am basketball tournament in Toronto. Tyrell also coached the Nike Bounce Team in the Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) as the U17 head coach. Tyrell is also a member of the Biosteel All Canadian Selection Committee.

Tyrell competed professionally with the Mississauga Power of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL) and was also the 2013 North of the Border Basketball League (NBBL) most valuable player and champion with Team 905.

Previous to his appointment to StFX University, Tyrell was the head coach at The RISE Centre (TRC Academy), a prep school in Brantford, Ontario that competes in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA). In 2018 and 2019 Vernon then led the team to back-to-back OSBA championships en route to being named the OSBA Coach of the Year.

Tyrell Vernon assumed Head Coaching responsibilities on April 1, 2021.
